Recommendation
1Business Financial/OperationsEach technical society is run differently, and it is difficult to know what to expect from each society. The recommendation is to have a bit more consistency in the offering of the individual societies. Maybe there can be a minimum to be expected from each society.
.
2Business Financial/OperationsIncrease the percentage of the member dues rebate that goes directly to the Section.
.
.
3Business Financial/OperationsIEEE to assist Sections in reducing currency conversion fees.
.
.
4Business GovernanceIEEE to reduce the complexity of its organizational structure, at least as reflected in its web site through the presence of the large number of sub-webs on wwww.ieee.org
.
5ConferencesMore subject matter that focuses on industrial practices and business-related topics. Software project management for example.
.
6Geographic Unit VitalityMGA to develop tools (such as checklists and guides) to assist volunteers at the section level to quickly build quality technical events (such as courses or tutorials). Enable volunteers to leverage and extend existing IEEE resources to improve technical events.
.
7Geographic Unit VitalityMGA to develop a system by which members could contribute their knowledge of the numbers of professionals and employers within each section, engaged in IEEE areas of interest. Sections would solicit local members to use this system and then use the resulting information to connect with potential new members.
.
8Increase Member InteractionArrange for chapters to have some meetings that are not in evenings. For example breakfast meetings with interesting talks. The problem with evenings is that those with kids often have too many family responsibilities.
.
9Increase Member InteractionMany local IEEE events are based on a speaker and an audience. Today this is less important as in the past, since a lot of information is available on-line. What our members need more is face-to-face networking time. The recommendation is to organize more such networking events.
.
10Increase Member InteractionArrange for company tours. This is a win-win as the company gets publicity and the member gets to learn more about the company and network.
.
11Increase Member InteractionRecord presentations for distribution (or webcast!) for members who cannot attend in person the often very interesting special sessions organized by the section.
.
12Increase Member InteractionMGA to establish and/or strengthen relationships with non-IEEE organizations of interest to IEEE members in order to facilitate greater section interaction with these groups (e.g. Makerspace, Lego League Robotics, etc). This will provide value to our members at a local level and raise awareness of IEEE among potential members.
.
13Increase Member InteractionMGA to establish and/or strengthen partnerships with TAB societies with global reach and focus on important societal and environmental topics relevant and complementary to engineering issues.
.
14Increase Member InteractionBecome more relevant to industry/employers: organize trade shows, job fairs, on site training
.
15IT OperationsIt is recommended that the IEEE create a ranked and categorized database of speakers that Sections and Chapters can use to aid in finding and scheduling IEEE events. The associated user interface would allow for searching by distance and by time in order to improve event coverage and efficiency.
.
16IT Operations - Geographic Unit ToolIt is recommended that the IEEE develop an enhanced e-Notice mailing list mechanism to allow Sections and Chapters to manage the sending of emails to non-members that are interested in IEEE events and activities, and who have opted-in to receiving such correspondence.
.
17Member BenefitsIncrease the number of free webinars available. Perhaps make them free for society members for webinars sponsored by their society.
.
18Member BenefitsSmart/predictive information and research topics suggested to members based on their interests and field of study as expressed in member profile.
.
19Member BenefitsReduced fees for post-docs, recent grads, and anyone in a low-income situation
.
20Member BenefitsThe IEEE should develop MOOC-style training courses in technical areas for working engineers and deploy them as a benefit of IEEE Membership.
.
21Member BenefitsPES/IAS Technical Seminars
.
22Member BenefitsI would recommend that IEEE membership should include access to a limited number of publications from the digital library per year (would suggest 3 articles/year, essentially one free month of the IEEE Xplore Basic package).
.
23Member BenefitsMove towards open access journals and publications.
.
24Member BenefitsOffer IEEE members access to a certain number of articles per month without subscription.
.
25Member BenefitsTo create an open source section in the IEEE website providing free courses designed specifically for interactive study to promote interaction among IEEE members. It can be technical or non technical topics that would profit both new and experienced members by promoting continuous learning.
.
26Member BenefitsIEEE membership to include access to a small number of free IEEE papers (from any society).
.
27Member CommunicationsMore public talks and events to the general membership, not exclusive to individual technical chapters
.
28Member CommunicationsIEEE must make it easier for members to opt-in/opt-out of certain type of communications (e.g., insurance & credit card offers).
.
29Member CommunicationsResponse from A. AghdamEnsure IEEE members are made aware of the actions arising out of the Sections Congress recommendations, as well as providing status follow up reports.
.
30Member CommunicationsRight now the main communication with members is through monthly newsletters. The recommendation is to also use all available modern tools, such as Facebook and Eventbrite. The idea is to help members see who else is going, in order to convince them to come out.
.
31Member Growth and DevelopmentPromote ties and collaboration between IEEE and Industry; attract more members from industry especially experts in technical domains, influence companies to support IEEE involvement and activities, and advocate the mutual benefit of collaboration to both IEEE and Industry
.
32Member Growth and DevelopmentEntrepreneurship is becoming a viable career option. The IEEE could provide resources to entrepreneurs.
.
33MembershipIEEE to make the community aspect of membership a more important feature in its promotional material.
.
34MembershipI would recommend that IEEE societies offer limited subscription options to their digital libraries (as an example, 15 articles/year for $XX).
.
35MembershipIntegrate and recognize chapters more closely in section / geographic activities.
.
36MembershipShortening the time to publication of journals and transactions and to increase their readership reach.
.
37MembershipImplementation of automatic subscription renewal system
.
38MembershipReward highly active volunteers through reduced membership fees.
.
39Pre-UniversityResponse from A. AghdamFocus on teacher education, to make sure teachers understand that ECE profession. Organize workshops in schools in order to help students explore the possibility of a career in ECE. One particular example would be to develop a noise cancellation platform as a demo to take to schools.
.
40Public AwarenessIt is recommended that the IEEE develop a strategy to engage its members to address climate change related adaptation (and mitigation). The strategy would consider the formation of partnerships with businesses, industry, and other organizations to realize the implementation of technical solutions by IEEE members for the benefit of humanity.
.
41Public AwarenessIt is recommended that the IEEE partner with more global and regional business and industry organizations and/or service clubs to increase IEEE's impact on society on a local, regional and global scale.
.
42Public AwarenessResponse from A. AghdamIEEE to arrange for IEEE members to speak in schools about careers in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Software Engineering (we must never forget the latter two). IEEE members could also offer to be resources for students preparing science fair projects.
.
43Public AwarenessUpdate the "ABOUT" page on the all section websites to better explain what IEEE does, how IEEE is organized(Regions, Societies, Chapters, etc.) and the focus of each Chapter and Affinity Group.
.
44Public AwarenessToronto has a fairly successful event called Science Rendezvous. The recommendation is for the IEEE to help do this in other regions as well. Ideally such an event will also combine the recruitment efforts of the different local universities, to give the importance of science and engineering a bigger voice.
.
45Public AwarenessIEEE to create more unified look to the many branches of the ieee.org web site.
.
46Public AwarenessIncrease public awareness
.
47Recruitment/ Retention (Membership)Implement and recognize a new member category -- the retired IEEE member. (another name such as "Retired Professional" may be more appealing)
.
48Recruitment/ Retention (Membership)IEEE should employ a graduated membership fee to members transitioning from student to full member. The fee should increase over a span of 5 years.
.
49Recruitment/ Retention (Membership)I suggest each IEEE member personally encourage at least one other person to attend an IEEE technical presentation. If these new invitees attain benefit from this and have commitment to their profession, they are likely to become involved and promote IEEE to others.
.
50Student Growth and DevelopmentIEEE to provide free membership to students registered in a recognized Computer, Software and Electrical Engineering Degree for the first year of their studies and in subsequent years offer free membership to society of their choice as part of their basic registration.
.
51Student Growth and DevelopmentIEEE to develop a "fair play" code of ethics for organizations and companies supporting student projects such that credit is given where credit is due, and that when there is financial gains originating from such collaborations, and when the student has not paid to undertake the work, that the student is appropriately compensated.
.
52_otherIEEE should offer authors an option to publish their research under an open access model.
